CT SCAN

A CT scan is a type of radiographic study that is performed to evaluate the soft tissues of the neck including the vocal folds. During a CT scan the individual being examined lies on his or her back and is placed within a doughnut-like machine. Multiple images are taken through a specific portion of the body displayed as “slices” of anatomy on a separate computer. Sometimes to help further delineate structures “contrast” is placed into the vein through an IV which can be seen on the examination. The images are then interpreted by a trained physician known as a radiologist. A CT scan is often helpful for detection of lymph nodes, evaluation of suspected masses, and determining extent of cancer including laryngeal cancer. CT can also be used in aiding biopsies of masses or lymph nodes in certain cases.
