The vocal cords are two band like structures located within the larynx or voice box. The vocal cords are commonly referred to as “vocal folds” because they are more like folds of tissue than cords. The vocal cords are protected by the Adam’s apple, or thyroid cartilage, and are located midway in the throat. The vocal cords are small in size, measuring only a few millimeters in thickness, and one and a half centimeters in length.
